Ben Caplan live at Kiju’s

Did you miss me?  I was on holidays, but don’t get too excited, I’m back!  While I was away, there was an influx of great weather, and it was so nice to see an old friend, the sunshine.

Next Tuesday August 18th at 9:00 p.m. we have an amazing singer/songwriter who is performing live at Kiju’s restaurant along with Taryn Kawaja.

Ben is almost always on tour; he has played  1000 shows since 2011, and is very much in demand.  His noteworthy achievements include the 2012 Nova Scotia entertainer of the year and the Rising Star from ECMA in 2013.  His unique voice is a joy to experience and you won’t be disappointed.

Tickets for this event are just $10.00 and can be purchased at the Box-Office at 50...

“Getting to know…Busy Bobby Cooper

I have had the pleasure of working with Bobby for the past year and a half.  Bobby joined the MTCC technical team in 2014. He brings a broad array of knowledge and his friendly disposition is of a magnetic nature.  Busy Bobby Cooper is a people person, who happens to be just as much at home with electronics as he is people.  It has been my experience since I have met him, that there is no problem either  electrical, technical, or video conferencing that he cannot fix.  It is my pleasure to introduce to you, our reader, Busy Bobby Cooper.

Box-Office Glenda:

Hello Bobby, I am happy to be able to sit down this afternoon and pose some questions to you.  You really do live up to your nickname Busy Bobby!  I will try and be brief...

CCMA’S Road to Halifax Songwriters Series is  upon us!

Mundane Monday, rainy days and Mondays always get me down, but it is Tuesday, and I am still feeling the chill.  We need to see sunshine. This past week or so seems more like fall than summer, especially when you have to wear a jacket IN JULY!  I am hoping this evenings CCMA Road to Halifax Songwriter’s Circle will instill a feeling of warmth.  Carolyn Dawn Johnson always puts a smile on my face.  I am one of her biggest fans and I don’t think she has recorded anything I didn’t like.  The rest of the ensemble is fantastic as well. The talented Bruce Guthro will be joining Carolyn along with Jordan Musycsyn and the Ryan Sisters.  It will be a very long day for me, here at the Box-Office, but oh so worth it.

On Wednesday we have the extremely talented...

Getting to Know…Stephen Antle

I thought it would be a fantastic idea to do a feature on 1 person per week in a segment entitled “Getting to Know” Each week (time permitting) I will sit down with a random employee/management personnel and ask pertinent questions and also some fun interesting facts in the lives of each individual.

Today’s lucky pick is Stephen Antle, who can already tell has a wicked sense of humor.  Stephen joined the MTCC in July 2014 as Event Producer and Technical Services Manager.  He brings with him 25 years worth of experience in the entertainment business.   He is my boss, but in this instance it will be ME that will be expecting answers.  I could really have a blast doing this!  And now, on to the interview.

Hello Stephen, now that we are ready to begin, I find myself thinking I should be on the side lines watching, not the person initiating an interview with my boss!  But I was never one to back down from a challenge, so here goes.

Refreshingly Warm

The Membertou Trade & Convention Centre has been bustling with “refreshingly awesome” decorating. The BOYZ ( Bernie & Greg) our fabulous duo painted the hallway on the main floor, and added two new swinging doors where black curtains once ruled. Audrey ( our GM) added her special touch with accents such as a wooden table, plants, a lamp, and of course art work. Presto, chango, a cozy, warm, inviting, and oh so appealing hallway appeared.  The space just denotes a feeling of wanting to curl up with a good book, a blankie, and a good glass of wine in hand.  I think it is probably a good idea that the big plush comfy arm chair is on another floor, otherwise you may just find ME lounging there!

I wish I had some “Before” pics to illustrate the stark differences, but alas, I do not.  I do however, have a few recent shots of different areas in our beautiful building to share with you. Thank you Ariel, for your assist with the photographs, much appreciated!

First up, Kiju’s bar has been lowered, much nicer, thanks Bernie & Greg.

MB2 Blog & Convention Centre- It's a Cat's Life

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live your life as a cat?  I sometimes look at Jasmine and Lucy (my two beauties) and think to myself, “Man, I am living wrong!”  These two perch and lounge, eat, sleep, and most importantly play all day long. (Of course they do get their days and nights mixed up sometimes, oh joy) They have a built-in chef, maid, groomer, and playmates at their beck and call.  When I get home from work each day, Jasmine runs to the door to greet me and tell me of the day’s happenings.  When she meows, I go along with her, I ask her if Bruno (our Alaskan malamute) was nice to her, and she happily tattles on him.  She has such charm and personality, and   she shows off constantly in front of Lucy,(who is not as bright!)  She sheds and sheds and sheds, and just when I think I have cleaned up all the fur balls from my 3 darlings, I find more stuck to my socks, or the couch, you get the gist of it! But even with all the mess, I wouldn’t part with any of them, especially Jasmine (or Snagglepuss as I lovingly call her).  She gets under my skin with her shenanigans, and...

One Day At A Time

Summer time on Cape Breton Island, there is no place I would rather be. The gentle ocean breeze with the salty brine is something I miss when I travel to other parts of our great nation.  We are an island, we are second to none in the natural beauty category.    We are also second to none in the entertainment industry.  We can compete with the best of them, we have home grown talent. Some of that talent will be performing right here at the MTCC.  The autumn season will start off with Country Explosion, a memorable evening last year was had by all.  All the “cowboys” and “cowgirls” vied to be numero uno on the mechanical bull.  Will they return this year to reclaim their fame?  Time will tell!

In mid October, Carroll Baker will be performing live.  Carroll is a national treasure, originally from Bridgewater N.S.  Not quite island grown, but close to it.  I am sure everyone remembers Carroll and Conway Twitty’s  “I’ve Never Been This Far Before”, or “One Day at A Time” This song brings back such great memories, just ask my kids. Once upon a time, I fancied myself as a country star...
